For this project, I made a comfort kit in the shape of a teddy bear. The package contains a bag of beans, four tea bags, two bottles of smelling salts, a sleeping mask and a pouch of eight ibuprofen tablets. Since the theme of the kit is to aid in comfort and relaxation, whether in moments of stress of pain, the items are themed accordingly. The teabags are coined as “tea-mometers,” and resemble thermometers, and the case for the tablets are “pill-ows,” resembling pillow cases. The smelling salts bottles mimic the shape of fish and each set comes with a sleeping mask matching the corresponding bear character. The name “scent-sun” is a wordplay I made from the Korean word “saeng-sun” which directly translates to “fish”.
The entire package itself can become a hot bag as instructions are printed on the fabric, informing the user how to use the package to it’s fullest potential. The beans that are included in the pack is meant for the sole purpose to be emptied into the bear. The package is environmentally friendly as the wrapping itself is made from canvas and has a second life as a hot bag.
The reason I went with a bear design is because I noticed that people hug or hold on to hot bags as if it is a doll, so I thought that I can make them more visually appealing and fun to change the shape to mimic a more comforting looking image of a stuffed animal. The elongated arms of the bear makes it easy for the user to drape it across their shoulders, back and abdomen.
