There are at least 7,102 known languages alive in the world today. 23 of these languages are a mother tongue for more than 50 million people. Can languages still convey meaning when stripped of their phonetics?

Briefing

Parametric builds upon the technical aspects of an earlier project, which uses Processing to visualize the sound signatures of environments. I wanted to explore language without its phonetics using 3D rapid prototyping. I thought of this idea when I stumbled upon an infographic on Information is Beautiful, which showed the world of languages. The sheer number of languages existing in the world is impressive, and I wanted to make a piece that tried to capture their essence.

This project is in development, but will be finalized by the Grad Show on April 19.
